This blog is about dance injury in general, and in particular, my own personal recovery and rehabilitation following a calf injury. There is a lot about hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Type III Hypermobility Syndrome and the multisystemic nature of my treatment, including documented physiotherapy treatment

Stretching and the cold!
Dancer stretching
Research has shown that it is better for hypermobile dancers not to launch straight into stretching before class. This is because they instinctively want to go into that type of movement because it is natural and generally effortless for them. Instead it is better for them to do a neurological or nerve type stretch or something more muscular - perhaps a pilates or strengthening exercise. I do the latter myself much more often, and am not stretching - however as with most things, a balance is required. It cost me (in terms of of pulled quads) not having warmed up as well, and most dancers dislike the cold weather - not easy on the muscles!
